Why Low Cost Pet Insurance?
Applying the wrong amount of Flea and Tick Medicine
can Cause death to your favorite pet
Pet owners now have a new threat to be wary of, flea and tick treatment. Millions of pets are treated every year to prevent flea and tick infestation. However, a new study conducted by the EPA has concluded that thousands of animals are suffering from the effects of the treatment. Many of the popular topical flea and tick medicines are being applied by diligent pet owners to protect their dog or cat from the pests, but may unknowingly cause harm to the beloved animal. Those who treat their dog or cat with the wrong amount of the medicine run the risk of poisoning their animal. Low cost pet insurance may cover some owners from large vet bills but may not cover the treatments if the owner is negligent.
Side effects being reported range from minor skin irritations, excessive drooling, convulsions and death due to the wrong amount of the medication being applied. The EPA reported receiving over 44,000 calls of adverse reactions tied to flea and tick treatments. This number has increased over 50% from 2007 numbers. 2009 numbers may be even worse as flea season was especially worse in the Northeast this year.
Cats and small dogs were the demographic affected the most due to the amount of medicine being used. Reports indicate that some owners mistakenly used treatments for larger animals which caused the adverse events. Most of these animals afflicted with issues were in the 10-20 pound range.
In summary, owners must remember that the popular flea and tick medicines being applied are toxic and meant to kill the pests. However, the label on the medicines should be read carefully and applied based on their instructions as this could cause irreparable damage to the animal. Pet insurance companies may cover such events, but others may not, which may end up costing the owner dearly in vet bills.
