Do not open until Christmas

He was a 3rd year art student when he first entered the coffee shop where I was waiting tables. He was a bit scruffy as artists go, I guess, but cute. He wore a scarf and khaki shorts in the middle of December, which I thought was odd, but unique.

I remember he ordered a slice of cherry pie and a cup of coffee and seemed to very easy going and free spirited. I noticed his green eyes when taking his order. They were sea green with flecks of gold and a hint of mischief in them. When he smiled, a small dimple appeared on the left side of his mouth.
After he finished, he asked me out and I agreed because I liked his smile and thought he was a bit quirky. I remember how passionate he was during dinner and how attentive to my needs during the entire evening. Opening doors and holding my chair when I sat down was a nice feeling and impressed me enough to want to see him again.

Over the following weeks, we had spent a great deal of time together and I could feel myself falling for him. Christmas break was a couple of days away and he was headed back north to see his family. We had spent an evening together the night before and I felt things were going well. Before he left, he handed me a small gift box and asked me not to open it until Christmas morning. I reluctantly agreed, but respected his wishes. We gently kissed goodbye and he was gone. It began to snow lightly as I watched him walk away.

Each day was a struggle not to pick up the phone and call him because he was always on my mind. Christmas could not come fast enough. I spent the next few days distracted and could think of nothing else but the small gift box sitting in my dresser drawer, waiting for Christmas morning.

Finally, the moment arrived and I could now open the gift. I opened the dresser drawer and held the box in my hand. As I untied the bow, my heart was pounding in anticipation. I knew it would be something special. The box contained a small note with an Irish poem written on it.

When his eyes behold you, succumb to his stare
When he speaks your name, believe his words
When love summons you, listen and hear the sound
Our life together starts with this small token that sits on your hand

My eyes teared up as I read the words and found a small silver and gold Celtic ring sitting in a gold pillow.

My heart was racing and my thoughts reeling as I placed the small ring on my finger. I composed myself and picked up the phone… that was 32 years ago, and to this day that ring has never left my finger.
